Sat. 6/27 - Just wishin', and hopin', and thinkin', and plannin'...

I decided to look at the glass half full and move forward assuming the surgery is ON for Monday. Since I've accepted the fact that this is what needs to happen, I put on my Type A planning glasses and begin researching the various things I can have prepared and ready for my post-op experience. I already have the crutches from my original accident and a friend is loaning me her late mother's wheelchair, so that's a great start. One of my big concerns isn't so much weight gain (though I'm not thrilled with the Covid-8lbs that I've already gained during quarantine, so I'd love if I can keep the weight off), but rather the lack of exercise affecting my mental well-being. Not being able to go for a run or at the least, cycle, for many months is going to be tough. However, a friend suggested I try to think about what I actually like about running/what I get out of it, and then not to look at what I can't do (i.e. "run") but rather what I CAN do that would achieve similar results. So I break it down. What I primarily like about running is:

- Feeling healthy, fit, and strong. The endorphins that come with the sweat and pushing myself.
- Being outdoors.
- Being on my own, having my own time away from "mommy" duties, allowing myself to clear my head.

There are a few ways I can still achieve similar results, either by simply sitting in the wheelchair on
Trying out my new Knee Rover
the back patio or lifting arm weights to keep the upper body muscles working even if the lower body can't. I end up finding a "Rolling Knee Scooter," that could fit the bill for getting outside on my own and at least going for "walks" with it once I'm mobile enough. Obviously this won't be used the first week or so, but hopefully when I get the all-clear from the doctor, I can begin getting out and moving (ever-so-slowly) on the scooter. My mom and dad gift this to me to ensure I have an easier time, and I'm actually excited to try it!!!

I have the best sister in the world and discover she has also been researching separately from me... she's sent me a care package in preparation for my surgery that includes a portable pedal bike for legs and arms, so I can start "working out" again from the comfort of my bed when I'm ready, and maybe even use it for the achilles (with Dr's permission, of course) when it's time for PT!

As for the immediate recovery, after spending the last three weeks propping my foot up on pillows that only sink in and move around without providing true elevation to reduce swelling, I find this little gem of a leg pillow made especially for post-op recovery, as well as this watertight cast cover for the shower so I don't have to mess around with garbage bags and rubber bands cutting off my circulation.

Necessities? No. But having a few things on hand to aid in my recovery makes me feel a bit more in control of the process (even if such control is just an illusion), and that makes me feel a little better about things.
